[Fan-made] “Jurassic Park: Chronicle”: the Monster Movie short takes us to the origins of the park!

Monster Movie friends have just released their animated short Jurassic Park: Chronicle, dedicated to our favorite dinosaur movie!


The short is set in 1991 and has as its protagonist Garrison Eriksen, a journalist who receives a tip regarding strange activities that are allegedly taking place on an island off Costa Rica. Called to investigate and against the instructions of his editor-in-chief, Garrison arrives at Isla Nublar and it doesn’t take long before he bitterly regrets it. You can watch it below!

Made with semi-animation techniques inspired by the 90’s video game cut scenes, the short tells the dark side of the newly born Jurassic Park, a place where there are no ethical limits and imagination and wants to fit into the so-called “soft canon” universe: characters and situations from the Jurassic Park universe, in contexts other than the original ones. Dr. Sorkin, for example, in the film is part of Telltale’s video game JP The Game, while the “cartoon” style of the drawing is also a tribute to Topps’ non-canonical comics. Many references to the saga also in the soundtrack, which incorporates the main obscure “topos” of John Williams and the instruments used for JP (including the jawbone, the real jaw of a mule that grating generates a sound of tension).

🐋#Backstage L’obbiettivo della colonna sonora di #JurassicParkChronicle era quello di commentare e supportare il sotto testo senza rischiare di cadere in forzature. Il compositore @francesco.berta sapeva fin da subito che avrebbe dovuto mettere da parte il proprio ego e abbracciare uno stile che non rispecchiasse del tutto il suo. Il regista @teoperseo chiese espressamente che all’interno della score ci fossero dei riferimenti e delle citazioni musicali, così il compositore affiancò la propria voce a quella del maestro #JohnWilliams, citando brevemente il tema principale di Jurassic Park e inserendo alcune delle sue strutture e soluzioni musicali che abbiamo imparato a conoscere nella saga, con lo scopo di richiamare lo spettatore ed immergerlo in un contesto familiare. A livello di strumentazione sono state registrate alcune delle percussioni che vennero utilizzate dal Maestro per #JurassicPark e #TheLostWorld, fra cui il #vibraslap, un curioso strumento composto da un manico, una palla e una scatola che si suona percuotendo la sfera e creando una vibrazione da un timbro vivace, bonghi, #thunderdrums e timpani. A questi si aggiunge un’orchestrazione classica composta da un’orchestra completa più coro, e textures create ad hoc partendo da strumenti a corda e percussione, e disposte una sopra l’altra su decine di layers allo scopo di creare textures di droni dinamiche 🦖#AneddotoSauro Nel pezzo che potete sentire qui sopra, si può scovare un #easteregg, ovvero l’arpeggio inconfondibile del title screen del videogioco per #GameBoy “The Lost World”, suonato brevemente dall’arpa nella sequenza dell’arrivo sull’isola.
